Introduction to navigation (2 day course)
This course is
designed for people who have little of no hill walking experience. The course
will include the following:
- Two full days of practical navigation in the lower hills of The Lake
District
- Introduction to different map scales
- How to set the map
- How to interpret contours
- How to interpret key symbols
- How to plan and follow a route using paths and other key
features
- How to use the compass
- How to re-orientate yourself if you do get lost
- Assessment to Bronze NNAS standard (optional - if you want to
attend the course for your own benefit and do not require the
certificate and cloth badge then you do not need to be assessed)
- Certificate and badge for successful candidates assessed to Bronze
level
Off path navigation (2 day course)
This course is designed to build on a level of experience equal to that
of the introductory course. the course will include:
- Two full days of practical navigation in the hills of The Lake
District
- Introduction to different map scales
- How to set the map
- How to interpret contours
- How to interpret key symbols
- How to plan and follow a route using paths and other key features
- How to plan and follow a route across featureless terrain
- How to estimate distance using pacing and timing
- How to navigate in poor or limited visibility
- How to use the compass
- How to re-orientate yourself if you do get lost
- Security on steep ground
- Mountain weather - how the weather affects our route planning and
choice during the day
- Emergency procedures in case of an incident
- Choice and use of equipment.
- Assessment to Silver NNAS standard (optional - if you want to attend
the course for your own benefit and do not require the certificate and
cloth badge then you do not need to be assessed)
- Certificate and badge for successful candidates assessed to Silver
level
Advanced Navigation Course (2 day course)
This course is for those who have gained experience of off path
navigation, and wish to hone their skills. In addition to basic
techniques, the course will include:
- Two full days of practical navigation in the hills of The Lake
District
- How to plan and follow a route across featureless terrain
- How to use navigation techniques in complex terrain
- How to navigate in poor or limited visibility or at night
- Relocation techniques
- Security on steep ground
- Mountain weather - how the weather affects our route planning and
choice during the day
- Emergency procedures in case of an incident
- Choice and use of equipment.
Assessment to Gold NNAS standard is available as an additional two day
assessment course.
